The department of Sociology
is one of the pioneer department of social sciences which came into existence in 1979
in Government Shivalik College Naya Nangal. At the graduation level the department offers a wide spectrum of courses spread over a period of six semesters in order to equip the students to pursue specialization in areas of their interest. Course curriculum has both academic as well as societal relevance and incorporates contemporary debates. Some of the required courses aimed at providing strong theoretical and methodological base while others are open courses, which also include courses pertaining to thrust areas like Family, marriage, kinship and other Social Structures, Social Change and social institutions, Gender studies, Urban and social Research Studies.
The department of Sociology helps the students to learn about social life, social change, social causes and consequences of human behavior. Since all human behavior is social, the subject matter of sociology ranges from the intimate family to the hostile mob; from organized crime to religious cults; from the divisions of race, gender and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture. Therefore, the department increases the knowledge of these tiny Social scientists to investigate the structure of groups, organizations, and societies, and how people interact within these contexts. The department provides many distinctive perspectives to the students to look the world, like generating new ideas and critiquing the old ones. Department of Sociology strives to provide the undergraduate majors with diverse educational experiences.

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY COURSE OUTCOMES.
- Students will gain insight into the emergence of Sociology as an independent subject of enquiry as well as the basic concepts of sociology, social institutions and social processes.
- Under Sociology of change and development students will get to know the dependency theory of world system, agencies of development social policies for planned development, effect of Information Technology revolution and Globalization on society etc.
- Examine the roles and responsibilities of individuals, groups, and institutions in larger society, displaying understanding of the complex relationships between human behaviour and the social context.
- Our degree programs are designed to produce graduates who can engage the world thoughtfully, critically, and creatively. Our hope is that the coursework we require will not only provide a solid base of anthropological or sociological knowledge and a set of skills to collect and evaluate information, but also that our assignments, readings, and classroom discussions will foster a sense of engagement as citizens committed to making the world more humane and livable.
